Today we were introduced to the first phase of part 3 which is Type and Image. For the first part of type and image, we were asked to explore silhouettes. I immediately thought of Malika Favre and her summer illustrations as she plays with negative space to create her silhouettes. I looked into her artwork and analysed how she would create those silhouettes and created a few of my own. (shown in sketchbook and outcomes) I then dug deeper and looked into more silhouette artists and I found Kiryk Drewinski. His illustration drawings were very interesting to look at and I dove deeper into what art style he was formatting into which was psychedelic art. They were very popular for rock bands in the 1960s and I found it interesting with the way they played with type and image together to make it union into one cohesive artwork. I liked the way the type intertwined with the clothes of the silhouette and how expressive his illustrations were. I then started creating similar work with my own photos and played with the lettering around the illustration. I wasn’t sure what to write for the images but as my theme was self-expression I wanted to write words that related to the person I was drawing or what I thought their style and vibe gave off. When drawing other people I asked the person what they think of themselves and wrote it down and incorporated it within the piece as that’s what they expressed themselves as. I was very proud and enjoyed creating within this type of art style so I created more. I started creating more silhouettes but just focusing on one colour to focus more on the edges to see what would be created and I enjoyed when the hair would come into play as they created a lot of fine lines that could stack and layer on top of each other. I started using solid colours to see if I could create a pattern and use colours that would generally be my commonly used colours as it was a photo of myself. I even started layering silhouettes together to create a movie-like poster and it gave me a Disney movie kind of aesthetic so I started looking for ways that could create the background to be more bright and scattered to bring attention to the silhouettes yet giving that princess/ prince aesthetic. After creating those pieces I moved on to see if I could mask photos on top. With one of my silhouettes, I masked a landscape of Hong Kong in it however it seemed very boring so I played with brushes that could help create the piece more obvious of what it was and work with the photo. I used red to compliment the green and blue sky and buildings of Hong Kong and used a brush that gave a 3D effect as the photo started to look very 2 dimensional.
